Z-Wave Alliance Shows That Small Changes Can Create Big Energy Savings at CONNECTIONS

(Jun 30, 2008)
Fremont, Calif. – The Z-Wave Alliance is pleased to announce its participation in the HP SmartHome, located Cupertino, Calif. Attendees at this year’s CONNECTIONS Digital Living Conference and Showcase, held June 24-26 in Santa Clara, Calif., will have the opportunity to tour the SmartHome during the event. Z-Wave Alliance member companies have teamed up to outfit the HP SmartHome with innovative window coverings that can be remotely controlled to maximize the home entertainment experience, increase the safety and security of the home, and enable energy conservation.

Z-Wave Alliance members Electronic Solutions, Inc., maker of the Z-Wave-enabled motor controls, and Source Northwest, fabricator of motorized window coverings featuring Z-Wave-enabled automation controls, provided the products and resources to turn the HP SmartHome’s windows into an extension of “smart home” functionality. This Z-Wave technology enables affordable solutions that allow consumers to utilize their window coverings for more than just decoration. Features include:

•    Blinds that can be controlled with the touch of a button, allowing for reduced glare on consumer electronics and enhanced overall home theater experience – all without leaving the couch

•    Window shades that can be closed remotely late at night or when the homeowner is away from home, securing the home by making it impossible for outsiders to see who is (or is not) home

•    Automated blinds that can close during the heat or cold of the day, trapping in the air to save on energy costs

In addition, Z-Wave products are interoperable, allowing consumers to easily combine Z-Wave-enabled window coverings with other home-control products, such as remote controls, thermostats, alarm systems and lighting controls to create customized solutions. For example, by selecting a pre-programmed “movie scene” button on the TV’s remote control, a user can dim the lights, close the blinds and turn on the DVD player.

“Z-Wave Alliance members have brought so many affordable products to the home control market that often motorized window coverings get overlooked,” observed Mark Walters, chairman of the Z-Wave Alliance. “Alliance member companies like ESI and Source Northwest are providing customers with affordable solutions to real-life challenges, such as energy conservation, privacy and security through their Z-Wave-enabled blinds and shades. These solutions are an important part of the total solution in smart living.”

“The HP SmartHome is designed to show visitors examples of how they can integrate digital home technology into their own lives,” said Brian Burch, marketing director for the Connected Entertainment business at HP. “Z-Wave’s window coverings, featured in the SmartHome, provide an affordable and easy way for consumers to take control of natural lighting and heat from virtually anywhere – the couch in the living room or the office across town.”

The Z-Wave-enabled window coverings will be showcased at the HP SmartHome during the CONNECTIONS Digital Living Conference and Showcase, held June 24-26, 2008, in Santa Clara, Calif. Additional information is available at http://www.parksassociates.com/events/connections/2008/.
